How do I pay in Rio – card, cash or Pix?
Major international credit cards are accepted throughout Brazil. Cash withdrawals at ATMs are generally possible, but many travellers report problems and daily limits range from R$ 500 to 2,500 depending on the bank – so don't rely on ATMs alone. Pay taxis and street vendors preferably in cash and carry only what you need for the day. Pix, Brazil's dominant instant-payment system, normally requires a Brazilian bank account with a CPF tax number; some third-party apps let tourists pay via Pix. When paying by card, always choose to be charged in reais (BRL) rather than your home currency.
