Which neighbourhood should I stay in?

For a first visit, stay in the Zona Sul, close to the main sights. Copacabana is the most convenient base, with the most services, shops and metro stations; Ipanema and Leblon are more upscale and calmer; Botafogo and Flamengo offer good value without beachfront prices. Santa Teresa is charming for culture and nightlife but very steep – less suited to people with reduced mobility. Barra da Tijuca makes sense mainly if your plans focus on the West Zone. Note: thefts happen in all neighbourhoods, including the popular ones, and even during the day.
