How safe is Rio for tourists?

According to the German Foreign Office, thefts and robberies occur throughout Rio, including Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo, Santa Teresa and Lapa, and also during the day. Thieves mainly target phones, jewellery, cards and cash; be extra alert after dark. Following the basic rules (valuables out of sight, taxi/app at night, never resist) keeps most visitors out of trouble.
